ELECTRO-TECHNICAL CADET

Electro-technical cadets are prospective shipboard officers who will be undergoing the prescribed cadet training program conducted by UMTC as a MARINA-accredited Maritime Training Institution in their preparation for their Certification as Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) onboard the ships. The job of an ETO is to maintain the operation of electro-technical equipment onboard the ship and in order for the ETO to fulfill that job, UMTC thinks of it as having to perform the following tasks as part of his responsibility. 

In order for an ETO to maintain the operation of any electro-technical equipment, ETOs are expected to perform the following tasks onboard the ships:


  1. Monitor the condition of electro-technical equipment;
  2. Operate electro-technical equipment;
  3. Test electro-technical engineering systems; 
  4. Conduct servicing on electro-technical engineering systems;
  5. Troubleshoot electrical, electronics, and control engineering systems;
  6. Repair and restore to normal working condition electrical, electronics, and control engineering systems; and
  7. Ensure electrical, electronics, and control engineering safety at all times.
  • Holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following:
    • Electrical Engineering (BS EE);
    • Electronics Engineering or Electronics & Communications Engineering (BS ECE);
    • Marine Engineering (BS MarE); or
    • Industrial Technology (BS Ind.Tech.)
    • major in Electrical,
    • Electronics, or
    • Instrumentation and Control.
  • Latest medical bulletin – They must be medically fit to enable them to participate in all aspects of the training, particularly the practical exercises.
  • Good communication skills
  • Effective leadership and teamworking skills
  • PRC License (as applicable)
  • SIRB
  • Passport
  • Industry-relevant Work Experience (Land-based or Sea-based)
