Electro-Technical Officer Course

The course aims to meet the mandatory minimum requirements for knowledge, understanding, and proficiency in Table A-III/6 specification of the minimum standard of competence for Electro-Technical Officers of the 1978 STCW Convention as amended for the following functions at the Operational Level: 

  • electrical, electronic, and control engineering;
  • maintenance and repair; and
  • controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons onboard.

Training ​outcome/s:

After the training, participants will fulfill the requirements of Table A-III/6 of the STCW Code, which stipulates competence in their actual duties and responsibilities onboard.

  • For the function of electrical, electronic, and control engineering, the participants should be able to:
    • monitor the operation of electrical, electronic, and control systems;
    • monitor the operation of automatic control systems of propulsion and auxiliary machinery;
    • operate generators and distribution systems;
    • operate and maintain power systems with a rated voltage of 1,000 volts;
    • operate computers and computer networks on ships; and
    • use internal communication systems
  • For the function maintenance and repair, the participants should be able to:
    • maintain and repair electrical and electronic equipment, monitor the operation of electrical, electronic, and control systems;
    • maintain and repair automation and control systems of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery;
    • maintain and repair bridge navigation equipment and ship communication systems;
    • maintain and repair electrical, electronic, and control systems of deck machinery and cargo-handling equipment; and
    • maintain and repair control and safety systems of hotel and galley equipment
  • For the function of controlling the operation of the ship and care for persons on board, the participants should be able to:
    • apply leadership and teamwork skills;
    • comply with pollution-prevention requirements;
    • prevent, control, and fight fires on board the ship;
    • operate life-saving appliances;
    • provide medical first aid on board a ship; and
    • contribute to the safety of personnel and ship

Entry Standard/s:

1. Holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics Engineering 
  • Marine Engineering; or 
  • Industrial Technology
    • Major in Electrical
    • Major in Electronics
    • Major in Instrumentation and Control

2. 21-30 years old at the time of application

3. Preferably holds a PRC license

4. Holder of a valid passport and/or Seaman's Book (SIRB) is an advantage.
