The COVID-19 outbreak has challenged UMTC in many ways, encouraging UMTC to try to adapt and conquer online and blended learning. For the past few months, UMTC has worked passionately to develop company-specific and generic Online Learning courses to accommodate high-volume training. Anti-Piracy, Pre-Departure Briefing & Safety Awareness are UMTC's company-specific courses that utilize the workplace's distinct information, policies, and procedures required. HAZMAT, Fuel Management, Ships Safety Officer, and Online Train the Trainer are UMTC's generic courses developed based on international and local regulations for onboard application. As for how UMTC has ultimately conquered online learning, here's an overview of the extensive webinar courses:
Company-Specific Courses
Anti-Piracy Awareness
It is inevitable for ships to pass through pirate-infested areas while onboard. UMTC crafted this course to ensure that officers are updated on the risks of piracy at sea. UMTC mandated company-specific control measures and reporting based on the 2020 Oil Companies International Marine Forum—BMP5. This training includes guidelines and management on preventing, acting, and behaving when faced with piracy-related situations.
Pre-departure briefing
Pre-departure briefings (PDB) are necessary to prepare the signing crew and keep them updated and informed on their roles and responsibilities at sea. PDB will help trainees understand their objectives so that they can fully master company expectations.
Safety Awareness Program
Safety Awareness Program is designed to refresh and update crew on Risk Management, focusing on safety-related matters in seafaring. This course aims to accustom crew with risk assessment methods and best practices using realistic scenarios.
Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets. - Leonardo da Vinci
Generic Courses
HAZMAT for Officers Webinar
This course trains Deck Officers to interpret and apply the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG Code) requirements and the United States Code of Federal Regulations 49 (US CFR49). As the acronym suggests, this course tackles hazardous materials or substances, such as toxic chemicals, fuels, waste products, and the like, that may cause significant risks to health, property, or the environment.
Marine Fuel Management
This course was created to inform and educate engineers on the new low-sulfur fuel requirements, including bunkering procedures, sampling and testing, fuel changeover procedures, local and international regulations, fuel mixing, and ECA. This is designed to provide marine fuel's technical, operational, and administrative aspects to mitigate commercial and environmental risks in ship operations.
Shipboard Safety Officer
This course is designed to brief and educate Deck Officers about the role, duties, and responsibilities of a shipboard Safety Officer. The International Safety Management (ISM) code indicates that assigning a ship safety officer who can uphold ship safety protocols to protect the ship's crew and cargo is crucial.
Guidance to Port State Control
This course aims to guide all ship officers and masters regarding Port State Control Inspection to meet the required international standards in various conventions, particularly regarding safety and pollution prevention, which PSC inspectors will look into during inspections.
Train the Trainer for Online Training
UMTC implemented Train the Trainer for Online Training for web-based instructor training. This course develops the necessary knowledge and skills in operating generic off-the-shelf software and applications and teaches methodologies and techniques for delivering interactive online training.
Apart from the web courses outlined above, UMTC collaborates with the Marlow Navigation Training Consultant to develop blended learning solutions that combine instructor-led distance learning and face-to-face assessment and certification. To advance a blended learning approach through cloud-based simulation, UMTC is currently merging with leading simulator vendors. Voyage Planning using ECDIS, Tropical Storm Navigation Ship Handling, and Maneuvering are a few of the courses UMTC is developing.
UMTC sustained online learning despite a global pandemic by developing webinar courses to accommodate the high demand for training while working to provide blended learning solutions that grant extra access to education. UMTC upholds the principle that nobody deserves to be denied high-quality training. You can elevate your seafaring skills and knowledge with the webinars offered by UMTC.
